NEW PRODUCT POST: Crocs 2008
Launch Date: Spring 2008
Crocs is breaking out of its plastic shoe mold. The makers of the absurdly popular comfort shoe debuted its 2008 collections at the Fashion Footwear Association of New York trade show (FFANY) in New York last week. The 28 new models featured much different looks than what we’re used to seeing from Crocs, but not to worry—the new styles still feature the brand’s trademark water-resistant, light-weight, flexible resin, Croslite, which gives the shoes their famous comfort.
The 14 new spring models in the original Crocs line include a women’s open-toe clog with a four-inch heel and a men’s blog with a leather upper. Crocs also introduced 14 new models for its You by Crocs line of women’s fashion footwear. The new line, which is Crocs’ first collection to introduce a traditional heel and a true flat, will run between $140-175. Styles include a shiny patent leather lace-up flat and a cork-wrapped three-inch wedge. Both lines will be available in stores and online in the spring.
As the Wall Street Journal notes, investors have kept an eye on Crocs since its introduction in 2002 for any signs of letdown from its phenomenonal and surprising growth. The new fashion-focused lines, as well as previous introductions of models integrating leather, suede and canvas, demonstrate the brand’s continuing efforts to diversify its styles and avoid any such letdown.
Do Crocs’ new fashion-forward styles make you think differently about purchasing Crocs?

Mhm, that's a good question! I guess you can apply the same tactic when you think about Dr Scholl's, which similarly added stylish new shoes to their orthopedic-but-not-fashion-friendly lines.
I may look at them to see if Crocs can pull off style and comfort all at once. However, they do make me think of gardeners and tourists in Times Square, so the idea of putting them on my own feet still has a long bridge to cross . . .
