In a time when so many families are struggling to get through the holidays, SA took a break from work spread some cheer to those in need. On December 9th, SA visited the Somerville Homeless Coalition’s (SHC) Family Shelter. SA sought to lift the spirits of the five families enduring tough times, and brighten the mood during this special time of year.
To make this holiday season a memorable one, the SA staff purchased and wrapped several gifts to put under the Christmas tree for each family. The gifts ranged from the direst of necessities such as blankets and warm clothes, to fun toys from the children’s wish lists. Since this time of year reminds everyone of the values of family, SA also wanted to provide each family with a keepsake that will live on forever. To do this, the agency led an arts and crafts project where the children designed and decorated their very own picture frames. SA then shot portraits of each family to put into their personalized frames.
Additionally, SA was able to lend a helping hand to the families of the Family Shelter and nicely decorate their shared home for the holiday season, giving it a warmer feel despite the numbing winter weather.
Since 1986, SHC has been serving upwards of 20 homeless families each year, by providing services, support, resources and housing to those less fortunate in the Somerville area. 90% of these families with children are headed by single mothers. After using SHC’s housing program, over 50% of the aided families are able to move into permanent housing.
The volunteer program has been a critical part of SHC. They work with over 2,000 volunteers and they are vital resources to the organization’s success.
